The Jaguar E Type was launched in 1961 in Geneva and remained in production until 1973. Over 30 years later it still tops most polls as one of the most beautiful cars ever made. The Jaguar E-Type is probably the most recognisable and coveted classic car ever made and the first choice for a classic open-top weekend getaway.

At Great Escape Classic Car Hire we love iconic, stylish cars and the more cylinders they've got the better. We also prefer the final versions of cars, despite what the purists say, because we like all the new ideas that go into them. So it was obvious for us to add an E-Type and inevitable that it would be a Series 3 V12 convertible with the classic 5.3 litre engine. This combination of stunning bodywork, superb roadholding and one of the all-time greatest engines turns the early E-Type from a capable sports car into a great grand tourer.

The Great Escape Jaguar E-Type is a 1973 V12 convertible with manual gearbox. It combines ivory white paintwork with a black leather interior.

According to Channel 4, the E-Type is "positive and life-affirming." While we wouldn't disagree, first and foremost we just think it's a fantastic car that drives as wella s it looks. Unlike many classics that have matured with age, the E-Type was hugely popular from the minute it debuted at Geneva in 1961. Thanks to its looks and low price it went on to become the must-have car of the 1960s. Jaguar constantly evolved it over 12 years, creating coupe, convertible and 2+2 bodystyles and Series 1, 2 and 3 versions with straight six 3.8 and 4.2 engines and finally 5.3 litre V12 power. There are a multitude of variations inbetween and much debate in E-Type circles about the merits of different gearbox, engine and brake combinations. We don't claim to be experts but we do love the car.
